Boca Raton Championship 2018

The Champions Tour returns to Boca Raton, Florida and the Broken Sound Club for this week’s Boca Raton Championship. Previously known as the Allianz Championship, this will be the first year the tournament will be played under a different name after the controversial German insurance company pulled its sponsorship. Despite the change, the field for this year’s event will once again be very strong including 2017 Champions Player of the Year Bernhard Langer, John Daly and Fred Couples among the notable entries. Langer enters the weekend as the favorite. Let’s take a closer look at this event and determine who is the best bet to win it all.

The tournament lost its longtime title sponsor, Allianz, last year. Martin County resident Hollis Cavner, the owner of Pro Links Sports, which runs the event, put together a deal that included support from the tour, Sallyport and various entities of the city of Boca Raton and Palm Beach County to keep the tournament going.

Cavner is confident he can find another company to replace Allianz. But he knows a tournament without a title sponsor doesn’t remain a tournament for long.

Cavner isn’t the only Martin County resident who has skin in this game. Nine players with Martin County ties – Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Russ Cochran, Brad Faxon, Fred Funk, Mike Goodes, Jesper Parnevik, Gene Sauers and Jeff Sluman – are in the 78-player field.

The last thing these players want to lose is a rare home game in golf, especially in a sport where players generally play better when they are used to the types of grass on a golf course.

There was much celebration last April when it was announced that Allianz, the controversial insurance giant from Germany, would no longer be the title sponsor of the PGA Champions Tour event at Broken Sound in Boca Raton that it had supported for the previous 12 years.

But whatever hopes the Tour and Boca civic leaders had to find a quick replacement have so far gone unfulfilled, leaving the municipality on the hook for an additional $1 million to stage this year’s tournament, which takes place as the newly renamed Boca Raton Championship this week at the Old Course.

“It’s too important for the community to lose it,” Mayor Susan Haynie said. “The concern was that if we didn’t have it this year it would go somewhere else.”

Allianz and Boca never seemed a perfect fit. The company, based in Munich, worked closely with the Nazis in World War II and Holocaust survivors still claim it owes $2.5 billion to Jewish policy owners from that era. Every year the tournament was held it attracted pickets at the club’s Yamato Road entrance protesting the company’s presence.

Last April 24, Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Jewish community cheered the announcement that Allianz had turned down a three-year contract extension. While tournament organizers had anticipated the move and had been searching for a replacement, one has yet to be found.
