Sam Houston State vs North Dakota State

After five national titles, North Dakota State is FCS royalty. Friday, Sam Houston State is coming at the king — and it best not miss. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET

The Bison had their streak of five straight NCAA championships snapped last winter when eventual champion James Madison ousted them from college football’s greatest tournament in a 27-17 semifinal defeat. NDSU hasn’t let one stumble deter one of college football’s greatest dynasties, however. The No. 2 seeded Bison have beaten their opponents by a combined score of 80-13 leading up to Saturday’s semifinal game against the Bearkats.

It’s not every weekend that the top offense and defense in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision collide, but that’s what Bearkat and Bison fans will witness tonight.

Sixth-seeded Sam Houston State travels to Fargo, North Dakota, to pit its FCS-best offense (552.4 yards per game) against second-seeded North Dakota State’s FCS-best defense (228.3 yards allowed per game) in a semifinal matchup that will be televised on ESPN2. Kickoff is scheduled for 7.

As electrifying as the Bearkats have been during head coach K.C. Keeler’s tenure, the offense has sputtered in the team’s last three playoff losses, which have come in either the quarterfinals or the semifinals.

Bearkats K Tre Honshtein converted field goals from 22 and 21 yards last week. He’s hit seven straight and nine of his last 10. North Dakota K Cam Pederson is 9-of-14 this season. He had a 50-yard attempt blocked last week. He’s only 2-of-5 in the last six games, but did not attempt a FG in three of those. Jaylen Harris is the better kick returner, with 857 yards and one TD on 36 returns, but the Bison don’t really need a great kick returner, considering their opponents don’t kick off very often.
