Wells Fargo Championship 2018

Tiger Woods’ post-Masters golf hiatus is officially over and his 2018 comeback tour will resume this week at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.

Woods does have winning experience in this tournament. He won the Wells Fargo in 2007, but hasn’t played at Quail Hollow Club since he missed the cut there in 2012.

Tiger hasn’t played on the PGA Tour since he finished T-32 at the Masters in April. The good news is that he has broken into the top-100 at No. 93 in the Official World Golf Rankings after starting the year at No. 656. Woods comes to Charlotte trying to win his first PGA tournament since 2013.

The PGA Tour is heading to Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, N.C., this week for the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. Rory McIlory is the Vegas favorite at 13-2, followed closely by Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler at 10-1. Tiger Woods, playing in his first PGA event since the Masters, is listed at 22-1.

Before you make any bets or enter a daily fantasy golf tournament on DraftKings or FanDuel, you’ll want to hear what the team at SportsLine has to say.

SportsLine’s prediction model, which was built by DFS pro Mike McClure, was all over Tiger Woods’ resurgence at the Valspar Championship. Despite being a 25-1 long shot, the model projected him as a top contender. The result: Woods shot 70 or better all four days and finished tied for second place

Tiger Woods returns to competition for his first event since the Masters, and his first of two consecutive tournaments. We’re tracking him at Quail Hollow.

The Masters 2018: Third-round

Most of the right names are in proper position. The final six groups in the third round of the Masters on Saturday include eight major champions.
The oddity among them: The final group contains zero.

Patrick Reed, the 27-year-old Texan who’s an established Ryder Cup hero, and Mark Leishman, an Australian who has contended here before, are each seeking their first major championship at Augusta National Golf Club.

Reed’s second-round 66 on Friday vaulted him into the lead at the tournament’s midway point, getting him to 9 under par and granting him a two-shot advantage over Leishman. In 2013, Leishman played in the final pairing on Sunday in the Masters, watching countryman Adam Scott force a playoff, which he won.

“Everyone wants to win, and if you don’t believe you can win them, then you probably shouldn’t be playing in them,” Reed said Friday evening. “I believe that if I play the golf that I know how to play that I can win majors.”

So many around them have already done it. The penultimate group consists of Sweden’s Henrik Stenson (2016 British Open) and four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who needs only the Masters to complete the career grand slam. Before them comes the duo of Jordan Spieth, whose three majors include the 2015 Masters, and Dustin Johnson, who won the 2016 U.S. Open.

Also among those final six groups: 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, 2010 British Open champ Louis Oosthuizen, 2013 U.S. Open champ Justin Rose and two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson. All are within seven shots of Reed’s lead.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both made the weekend at the Masters, but the pre-tournament hype that the two 40-somethings could contend proved untrue.

After posting the best round of the day at Augusta National in the first round of the 2018 Masters, Jordan Spieth will be back on the course early to start Round 2 on Friday. Spieth had the patrons wowed with his eagle at No. 8 during his spectacular opening round, which included five birdies in a row. The 2015 Masters champion will hit the course at 10:53 a.m. ET to see if he can extend his lead into the weekend.

Tiger Woods is set to tee off at 1:27 p.m. ET along with Marc Leishman and Tommy Fleetwood. Woods described his 1-over 73 as “sloppy” on Thursday, pointing to the lack of birdies on the par-5s and some mishits that caused his score not to reflect how well he played in his first round back at the Masters in three years.

fter flirting with the lead early in his second round Friday, three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson saw his day — and possibly his tournament — go off the rails.

First an attempted punch-out at No. 9 ricocheted hard off a tree and landed near a bush, and Mickelson was eventually forced to take a drop. The triple bogey moved him to 3 over for the day and 1 over for the tournament. Mickelson rallied with a birdie at the difficult 10th hole, but then recorded a bogey and double bogey on the next two holes, dropping to 3 over for the tournament.

Mickelson, playing in an appealing group with Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler, entered the mix early with a birdie on No. 2 during a tough morning for scoring. He gave that stroke back with a bogey on No. 4, and continued to hang around near the lead until the struggles at No. 9.

His playing partners, meantime, both remained near the top of the leader board for much of Friday’s round. Kuchar, tied for second after Thursday’s opening round, had eight pars and a bogey on the front nine, making the turn at 3 under, with a share of the lead.

Tiger Woods is back at the Masters for the first time since 2015, and many fans will watch every shot he takes as he searches for his first major since the 2008 U.S. Open.

Marc Leishman will look to defend his title at the 2018 Arnold Palmer Invitational, but all eyes will be on Tiger Woods, who will make his first appearance at Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida, in five years.

The PGA Tour is heading to Orlando, Florida, on Thursday for the 2018 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Tiger Woods, an eight-time winner of this event, is the Vegas favorite at 6/1, followed by Jason Day and Rickie Fowler at 12/1. Fowler opened at 20/1 before moving up the odds board.

Tee times are scheduled to be posted one day before the start of the tournament and can be found by clicking here. The tournament will run from Thursday through Sunday.

The Golf Channel and PGA Tour Live will carry full coverage of the event. For access to the full schedule and live-stream links, click here.

The purse has been increased slightly from last year, with a total of $8.9 million up for grabs. The winner’s share will be $1,602,000, per the PGA Tour official website.

Another curveball: Marc Leishman, the 2017 champion, doesn’t sniff the top 10. He’s somebody to completely steer clear of this week.

Leishman was cut at the Genesis Open and finished 37th at the WGC-Mexico Championship. He’s outside the top 100 on the PGA Tour in both driving accuracy percentage (55.66, 152nd) and greens in regulation percentage (65.56, 103rd).

Also, the model says four additional golfers with odds of 20/1 or longer will make a run at the Arnold Palmer Invitational title. Anyone who bets on these underdogs could hit it big.

Golf has once again been swept away by the hype that always comes when Woods plays well, courtesy of his second-place finish at the Valspar Championship in Florida.

Jay Haas became the second-oldest tournament winner in PGA Champions Tour history in October 2016, when at 62 he won his second Toshiba Classic golf tournament.

Back then, the tournament was in its second year of being played in the fall. There was no event in 2017, as a schedule change meant it would be moved back to its traditional time earlier in the tournament year.

At 64, Haas now will be the oldest defending champion in tour history when the three-day tournament begins Friday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Tournament Executive Director Jeff Purser said he’s happy to have the tournament — which has a total purse of $1.8 million and a first-place prize of $270,000 — back in March. A $50-million renovation at Newport Beach Country Club was completed last summer.

“It’s good to be getting back to our place in the sports landscape and event landscape in Orange County,” Purser said. “When we made the move to the fall, a lot of it was to accommodate Toshiba, and they’ve gone through some changes, so it’s not as necessary. A lot of things have changed in that time frame, including the tour’s landscape and what their schedules are. It’s good for us to get home to where we kind of feel like we’re the lead event, at least at this time of the year. We’re excited about it.”

Haas, who also won the tournament in 2007 and has 18 victories on the Champions Tour, is one of two multiple Toshiba Classic winners in the field. The other is fan favorite Fred Couples, who counts the 2010 and 2014 Toshiba titles among his 13 Champions Tour wins.

Purser said he’s also excited to have two longtime standouts from Spain, Jose Maria Olazabal and Miguel Angel Jimenez, competing in their first Toshiba Classic.

Peter Jacobsen and Tommy Tolles, two Southwest Florida golfers in the Chubb Classic this week at TwinEagles in Naples, are starting the 2018 season with conflicts, uncertainty and an experimental approach.

The PGA Tour Champions players each have a different mindset while focusing on the new season — for Jacobsen, it’s truly a matter of playing around conflicts with his television schedule, and for Tolles, it’s almost like starting all over again.

Vartan Kupelian is a PGATOUR.COM contributor. Each week, Kupelian will size up the field and provide his top 10 players going into the tournament, based on factors such as the player’s strengths, the course setup, recent performances, etc.

Jerry Kelly was philosophical about his T3 finish last year at the Chubb Classic.

“I’ve got to pay my dues,” he said.

The Chubb Classic marked Kelly’s debut on PGA TOUR Champions and an impressive top-10 finish was an acceptable launching pad. This year, Kelly arrives at TwinEagles Golf Club in Naples with a decidedly different approach.

Kelly won twice last year on PGA TOUR Champions and earned Rookie of the Year honors. He started the current season with a third victory, at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, and has become one of the must-watch players on PGA TOUR Champions. Kelly’s game is in fine form and he returns this week after playing back-to-back events on the PGA TOUR.
