Sergey Lipinets vs. Mikey Garcia

Mikey Garcia is looking to become a four-division world boxing champion on Saturday night, against IBF junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets, the event takes place live from San Antonio, Texas, televised and live streamed online in the UK on BoxNation.

California native Mikey Garcia has no losses, he owns world titles at 126, 130, 135 and now wants to win one at 140 pounds, he will face off against fellow unbeaten fighter, Sergey Lipinets, who sports a record of 13 wins, no losses, with 10 by way of knockout and owns the IBF belt.

Garcia at 30 years old is one of the top 5 best pound for pound in the world today. He’s trained by his father Eduardo, and brother Robert out of the Riverside boxing academy.

Mikey Garcia is attempting to win his fourth world title in as many divisions on Saturday night where he squares off with Sergey Lipinets in the main event on Showtime (10:15 p.m. ET). Garcia and Lipinets were originally scheduled to square off last month at the Alamo Dome, but an injury to Lipinets’ hand pushed back the fight date.

WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia looks to make history on Saturday night when he looks to win a fourth world title in a fourth different weight class, as he challenges Sergey Lipinets for the IBF junior welterweight championship from the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Tex (10:15 p.m. ET, Showtime).

The fight was originally slated to occur in February but Lipinets suffered a hand injury in training.

Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) has looked nothing short of fantastic since coming back off a two-year hiatus, dispatching of both Dejan Zlaticanin and Adrien Broner with ease in 2017. Now, he has his eyes set on bigger prizes, like locking down titles anywhere from 135 to 147 pounds in boxing’s “money division. But first, he must deal with Lipinets and his 140-pound IBF title on Saturday.

The fight will be shown on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Action on TV and online, with the coverage starting at 2am GMT. Sky Go customers with the channels in their subscription can live stream it, so you can watch the fight on your mobile or tablet wherever you are.

The final press conference was held Thursday afternoon as WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez (23-0, 19 KOs) of Tucson, Arizona by way of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and former world champion Scott Quigg (34-1-2, 25 KOs) of England met at the Conga Room at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles.

Scott Quigg is a great fighter and he proved that to me in that sparring session. Ive been telling everybody if the fight is as good as the sparring session, they can expect fireworks because Scott Quigg is a great fighter.

Roach is more than confident in his fighter going into this weekend’s fight, “Valdez is a very tough guy”, said Roach (via Sky Sports). Valdez has been tipped for greatness after picking up the WBO featherweight title en route to a ideal 23-0 record, with 19 wins coming inside the distance.

Quigg is a former WBA world super-bantamweight champion before he lost his title in a split-decision defeat to Carl Frampton in which he broke his jaw after just four rounds.

The Northern Irishman has also moved up to featherweight and has admitted he could offer Quigg a rematch if he beats Valdez – but a defeat would make it hard for the Bury man to make that fight.

Featherweight world titleholder Oscar Valdez will make his fourth defense against Scott Quigg in the main event of a card that will air live on ESPN in the United States beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, from the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Apart from a stoppage of Jose Salgado and a points loss to Carlos Cuadras, the career of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai can be practically ignored up until the start of 2017.

The Thailand man had fought and beaten a host of debutants and fighters with losing records in his home country, and when he was picked out to fight the pound-for-pound number 1 fighter Roman Gonzalez, it was simply a formality.

But that infamous night in March went wrong for so many who had believed the unbeaten Gonzalez would take his already brilliant career to the next level as a mainstream star.

Size does count but not always the way you might think, especially in boxing where bigger is not always better and smaller is frequently as good as it gets.

It’s probably safe to say that most casual boxing fans have never heard of these guys. They might also suffer from the common misconception that fighters weighing between 105 and 115 pounds just flit around the ring throwing feeble punches. It’s an understandable assumption but wrong.

Actually, the opposite is true. Smaller fighters have a physical advantage over their heavier colleagues that allows them to do things larger fighters wouldn’t dream of. Biologist/boxing writer Matthew Swain explains why:

“Physiologically, the reason that they can throw so many more punches comes down to surface area to volume ratio in two systems, the skin and the lungs. Small people have a comparatively larger surface area to volume ratio, so the heat being generated by their muscles is dissipated on the skin much more quickly than large people, and because of their much smaller mass and shorter limbs, they are generating less heat to begin with, so they are staying cooler, making them much more efficient.

Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux are set to take center stage on Saturday night in a match pitting two fighters who have each won multiple Olympic gold medals — the first such match ever seen in the sport. Legend Roy Jones Jr. went so far as to say it’s the best fight on paper in the history of boxing. It’s also dripping with storylines.

Both men are double Olympic gold medallists in their amateur days, Lomachenko triumphing in 2008 and 2012 while Rigondeaux took bantamweight honours in 2000 and 2004.

Given their impressive amateur records, the two are relatively inexperienced in the paid ranks with just 27 fights between them.

Cuba’s Rigondeaux remains unbeaten but is jumping up two weight divisions to face WBO super-featherweight champion Lomachenko, hoping to inflict a second career defeat on the Ukrainian.

When Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc. signed two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko out of Ukraine in 2013, the outspoken promoter did not mince words, calling Lomachenko the best fighter he’s seen since a young Muhammad Ali, who Arum promoted to start his career 51 years ago.

That’s about as tough a comparison to live up to as imaginable in this sport. But Lomachenko, a southpaw who compiled an incomparable 396-1 record as an amateur, did not attempt to downplay his arrival on the professional scene. “I am not like most fighters. I want to be on the list of the greatest, best boxers in history,” he said, shrugging off the pressure of otherworldly expectations.

Daniel Jacobs vs. Luis Arias

HBO Sports visits Long Island’s newly renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, NY, for the first time for an explosive tripleheader of action when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: DANIEL JACOBS VS. LUIS ARIAS AND JARRELL MILLER VS. MARIUSZ WACH AND CLETUS SELDIN VS. ROBERTO ORTIZ is seen SATURDAY, NOV. 11 at 10:00 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) exclusively on HBO.

This week, Daniel Jacobs (32-2, 29 KO’s) makes his return to HBO as part of a new deal with the network when he faces undefeated upstart Luis Arias (18-0, 9 KO’s) in a 160-pound contest. In addition, heavyweight Jarrell Miller (19-0-1, 17 KO’s) will make his HBO debut when he faces Mariusz Wach (33-2, 17 KO’s) in the co-feature bout. Both Jacobs and Miller will enter the ring as substantial favorites in contests that seem on paper to be mere showcase bouts. However, could we be in store for a surprise or two on Saturday?

Daniel Jacobs (that’s him on the left, Arias on the right flanking promoter Eddie Hearn) comes into this contest a hot commodity on the basis of a better than expected performance in a losing effort to Gennady Golovkin in March. Remember, for that fight Jacobs significantly outweighed Golovkin in the ring and was theoretically able to absorb Golovkin’s punches better with that weight advantage. Also, keep in mind the 2017 Golovkin has not at all looked like the Golovkin from years prior. So there seem to be some logical reasons why Jacobs exceeded expectations.

Jacobs still has not corrected many of the defensive issues that were apparent in a 2010 knockout loss to Dmitry Pirog. Moreover, Jacobs is now 30 and has been squeezing down to the 160 pound weight limit basically his entire career. Eventually he is going to have to move up and asking him how much he is draining himself to stay in that weight class is a reasonable question to ask.

Luis Arias is a good fighter with above average hand speed who has been hungry for an opportunity. He was an accomplished amateur and with that extensive background is well schooled inside the ring. As a pro, Arias has shown tremendous improvement throughout his career, climaxing with his best performance his last time out in June when he stopped Arif Magomedov in five rounds.

Arias is a fighter who is peaking and fighting with confidence. His combination punching and hand speed could give Jacobs serious issues. By no means is Arias a pushover opponent for Jacobs.

There is no question Jarrell Miller is a talented fighter. But there are questions about his motivation and conditioning. For his last two fights, Miller nearly tipped 300 pounds on the scale. In those contests, he was able to physically overwhelm his opponents with his size. But in Mariusz Wach, Miller is facing a much more physically stronger heavyweight than he has ever faced in his career.

Miller is certainly more talented, but Wach has experience with going rounds with physically big men. What happens if we get to round six and Wach is still pressing forward, throwing punches with authority? We have not seen an opponent physically push Miller deep into a fight and this could be the night. And then the conditioning issues for Miller could come to the forefront for the first time in his career.

Anthony Joshua vs. Carlos Takam Live

Anthony Joshua vs. Carlos Takam

Fight night is replaced by fight afternoon on Saturday, as Anthony Joshua is putting his IBF and IBO heavyweight titles and an undefeated record on the line against Carlos Takam. The fight, taking place in Wales, will be shown on Showtime and was scheduled after Kubrat Pulev had to withdraw from facing Joshua because of a shoulder injury. Joshua is the favorite heading in, but Takam has experience on his side. The size and youth of Joshua, however, will be a difficult obstacle to overcome. The action will start at 3 p.m. ET, and promises to be an exciting bout

Anthony Joshua is wary of Carlos Takam’s admission he has learnt from his previous defeats. The Frenchman, 36, on Saturday becomes the latest challenger to Joshua’s IBF and WBA heavyweight titles having replaced the injured Kubrat Pulev with less than a fortnight to spare. He previously lost a non-title fight against WBO champion Joseph Parker, having been stopped by Russia’s Alexander Povetkin and outpointed by the little-known Gregory Tony before then, but insists they have helped him progress.

Between Anthony Joshua’s epic encounter with Wladimir Klitschko and the Mayweather vs McGregor super-fight, it’s been quite a year in the boxing world. In fact, it wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest 2017 will go down as one of the greatest years in boxing history – but before we reach that judgement, there’s the small matter of Saturday’s encounter between Anthony Joshua and Carlos Takam.
